Reclaimed Wood or Lumber has a past and has been used for buildings and structures from the 18th to the early 20th century. The wood is recycled and reused to meet today’s ever-growing need for sustainable and eco-friendly homes and businesses.
Today’s century-old reclaimed wood emerges from a time when wood was in abundance, both in North America and Europe, and was used as a principal building material.
As the industrial revolution took hold sawmills were often the core of many towns, providing employment and a plentiful supply of wood.
The majority of the recycled flooring, wall paneling, and furniture you see in homes, offices, bars, and restaurants, comes from the factories, warehouses, mills and railways of the mid-west.
In recent years we’ve come to learn to protect our world and there is less wood available for construction, so we’ve looked to the ecological equivalent to newly harvested wood – reclaimed wood.
Reclaimed wood is a stylish and popular choice to decorate and enhance commercial premises and modern homes.
Wood over 100 years old is particularly suitable for high-traffic areas, due its tight grain, which makes it resistant and hard-wearing.
Why use reclaimed wood for our furniture?
Reclaimed Lumber is Inherently Eco Friendly
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is the US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) benchmark for designing, building and operating green buildings. To be certified, projects must first meet the prerequisites designated by the USGBC and then earn a certain number of credits within six categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation and design process.
Reclaimed lumber is LEED certified
Using reclaimed wood can earn credits towards achieving LEED project certification. Because reclaimed wood is considered recycled content, it meets the ‘materials and resources’ criteria for LEED certification, and because some reclaimed lumber products are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, they can qualify for LEED credits under the ‘certified wood’ category.
Reclaimed Lumber is Stronger and More Durable
Another reason consumers and designers alike choose reclaimed lumber is its unique appearance and its strength, stability and durability. Many experts believe the relatively increased strength of reclaimed lumber is due to the lack of air pollution that existed up until the 20th century.
Another reason reclaimed lumber is stronger than boards cut now is the fact that these trees were often harvested from virgin forests that had hundreds or even thousands of years of slow growth without human intervention.
Wood naturally expands and contracts through the year as the moisture content and temperature of the air changes. Newly sawn lumber does this inherently more than lumber that has been reclaimed. Reclaimed lumber has been through this expansion and contraction hundreds of time in many cases rendering the wood more stable than new lumber.
Types of Reclaimed Wood
We offer Reclaimed Douglas Fir, which is our most commonly used wood. In addition we offer Reclaimed White Oak, and Reclaimed Walnut at special request.
These bar stools were the perfect addition to my new kitchen. I really appreciated Kyle's patience with all of my questions and willingness to accommodate the custom height request. The stools arrived on time and to my exact specifications. They were easy to assemble and look great.
Great communication and fast arrival. We ordered clear coat on wooden seat which was a lot lighter than sample pictured. We should have asked for physical sample and ended up sanding/ staining. Regardless very pleased with the purchase. Highly recommend seller.
I was very impressed by both the quality of the product and the exceptional customer service here! It was so easy to communicate with the owner and he made sure my custom made table & bench were exactly what I wanted!! It was shipped promptly and was actually super easy to assemble (user-friendly instructions included). Looking to get an entertainment center next!!
Purchased a console table with custom dimensions, this exceeded expectations! We chose a beeswax finish which looks perfect, and the wood was finished nicely. Adjustable ends on our hairpin legs are key for our uneven floorboards. The BarnXO team was so easy to work with, and they knew exactly what we needed.
I purchases these chairs for my restaurant and I just can say good things about them. Great high-quality product, fast shipment and prompt reaction when I had questions. All in all a very good experience.
Received this table today. It is gorgeous and very well made. Like a work of art. It was packed incredibly well! Took approximately 4 weeks from the day I ordered it. Fairly easy to assemble as the legs are color coded. Getting a hold of the shipping company to find out delivery day was dicey. It was delivered today with no phone call, no notice. Good thing I was home. I live in a gated community and the driver wouldn't have been allowed in. Other than that, I am so pleased to own this incredible piece of hand made furniture made from reclaimed wood.
Barn xo has met and surpassed my expectations! High quality reclaimed barn wood furniture at a reasonable price. Great customer service! Jerry helped me find what I was looking for and got it to me fast!
There are great looking, very sturdy stools. Minor issue...flat, hard seats. Foam pad solved that. The seats and metal frames were shipped from different locations, and the screw holes to join them were slightly off in some places and had to be redrilled. No big deal.
